- Typically, after separation, a parent can make an Application for the assessment of child support
from the other parent through Centrelink. - The Government assess a party’s liability to pay child support according to a formula which is
based on the children’s ages, the income of both parents and the number of nights the children
spend with each parent and other factors. - This is an administrative function and, in most cases, this administrative function is designed to
save parties money and the Court cannot (accept in limited circumstances) make Orders for child
support. - Parties can enter into their own negotiations as to an appropriate level of child support, including
periodic and non-periodic payments and this can be included in a Child Support Agreement which
can be binding or limited and which can be registered with the Child Support Agency.
